FOUNDER OF CALM HARBOUR THERAPY

About Nick Dommett

Hi, I’m Nick. I’ve worked with children and young people for over 18 years, both as an academic tutor and an integrative psychotherapist.

Throughout that time, I've worked with people of different ages, strengths and experiences, including both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals.

What I’ve been struck by is how people make real progress when the right support is in place, support that places their uniqueness at the centre rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Again and again, I see the difference it makes when people are given a space where they feel genuinely listened to, understood and accepted.

While my academic background is in the social sciences, it has always been the “social” that drives my passion. I've long been interested in how people survive and thrive through the most difficult of circumstances, and how relationships help shape who we become.

This belief remains at the heart of my work today: healing and growth happen through relationships. While my approach is informed by a range of therapeutic models, the relationship we build together remains central to the work.

Working with Neurodivergent Children

Neurodiversity accounts for up to 30% of people globally, with labels like Autism, ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia becoming more well known. And yet, many neurodivergent children spend much of their lives feeling misunderstood, with their differences viewed as difficult, disruptive or challenging.

Even the terms ‘neurodiversity’ and ‘neurotypical’ suggest an ‘us’ and ‘them’, when in truth everyone is unique.

I have worked closely with many neurodivergent children, and firmly believe that children thrive when they feel understood and accepted as they are rather than somebody who needs saving or ‘fixed’.

I work to understand each child's individual experience, recognising both their strengths and the genuine challenges they may face, while considering the wider context of their life, relationships and environment.

Therapy is not just about the individual child or adult - parents and carers often need space to think and feel supported too. This could be where Reflective Parenting or personal therapy can also provide valuable support.

Where appropriate, I work collaboratively with families, carers, schools and other professionals to help build greater understanding, confidence and connection.

My approach is neuroaffirming and grounded in the belief that every child is unique.

THERAPEUTIC MODELS

No two people are the same, which is why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy.

As an integrative psychotherapist, I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches to meet the needs of each child, young person, adult or parent I work with.

My practice is rooted in person-centred, attachment-based and psychodynamic thinking, while remaining flexible enough to adapt to the individual in front of me. Whatever form the work takes, the therapeutic relationship remains at the heart of the process.
